Windows File Recovery Disk
When Windows Crashes it can be a nightmare. If you have to re-install Windows it destroys all of your personal files. But, even if Windows becomes corrupted, your files could still be good as long as the hard drive hasn't totally died.
You can use a Knoppix live CD/DVD to recover your data before re-installing Windows.
Simply insert the CD/DVD with your BIOs set to boot from CD. Consult your computer Manual.
Both the CD and DVD will recognize your hard drives, CD/DVD drives and/or USB drives. Make sure the USB drive is installed before booting to Knoppix.
Works
on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 2000 Professional,
Windows Millenium, and Windows 98 PCs provided the PC meets Minimum
Requirements.

On the desktop [hda1] and [hdb1] are the hard drives using the CD. [sda1] is the flash drive. The gold disks are the DC/DVD drives.

The DVD desktop specifies Hard Disk [hda1] and Hard Disk [hdb1], and Flash Drive [sda1].

Double Clicking the Desktop Icon lets you see your files and copy them. They can then be pasted to another hard drive, a flash drive, an external USB drive, a CD/DVD drive, or across a network. This is best done by opening a dialog box for each drive and then copying from one to another.
Warning: Linux can read the NTFS file format, but has a reputation for producing errors writing to NTFS formatted drives. For best results write to a CD/DVD (requires 2 drives) or a drive formatted FAT 32 such as a flash drive or external USB drive formatted FAT 32. Most Windows 2000, XP, and Vista computers have hard drives formatted NTFS but they can be formatted FAT32.
To backup to a CD/DVD you need two CD/DVD drives (One must be a CD/DVD writer) as the Knoppix CD/DVD cannot be removed while you are doing the backup.

Inserting a blank CD/DVD into the second drive opens this dialog box when running Knoppix from DVD. Click on Create Data CD with k3b.

This opens kb3 on the right. Clicking the desktop icon for your drive opens the box on the left. Simply drag your files to k3b and then select BURN.
When running Knoppix from the CD you need to manually open k3b using START, UTILITY, TOOLS, k3b.
Knoppix automatically configures your CD/DVD drive and will try to configure your network if you have a network card, however, this can become very complicated and differs greatly from one computer to another. It is not possible for us to give instructions for using this method as it requires trial and error and a knowledge of your individual network settings.
